How-To: iTunes track deletion [Hitting two birds with one stone]

How many times have you found yourself in this situation:

You’re listening to a specific playlist / smart playlist in iTunes and happen to hear a worthless track worth deleting. Naturally, you would have to switch back to your iTunes ‘Library’, search for the track, and then manually delete the file. By default hitting the delete key while a specific track is highlighted in the playlist does nothing.

Instead of having to switch back to the main library to delete individual tracks from a playlist and the main library, use one of the following keyboard combos:

OSX users: Option + Delete
Windows users: Shift + Delete

Using one of the aforementioned keyboard shortcuts will prompt you with a window similar to the one above.

Update:
These keyboard shortcuts also work while listening to tracks in Shuffle mode.

Apple really needs to add these keyboard shortcuts to the iTunes help file. [via]

Welcome. It is definitely something every iTunes user should know. I can’t count how many times I ignored bad songs just because I was too lazy to switch programs to find the annoying file.

Yes! Thank you! The old Rate-the-song-with-1-star-to-indicate-I-want-to-delete-it-then-go-
back-to-Library-Sort-By-Rating-and-delete file thing was incredibly cumbersome. It’d be even better if they included it in the context menu, “Clear” is confusing as it stands, “Remove from playlist” and “Remove permanently” might make more sense. Ah well, I’ll settle for the shortcut.

Thanks – I can’t believe there isn’t a menu item for that! Wicked shortcut :)
